Monasteries

Witnesses to the rise and fall of the Serbian medieval state are the monasteries. The rulers built them in honor of the saints, but also as the place they chose for their eternal rest. The Serbian monasteries preserve the relics of the saints, and the painted walls feature representative murals and wall painting. There are almost no monasteries that have not been destroyed in their history, but fortunately, they still live today as Tumane near Golubac and Vratna near Negotin.
